The Heart of the Matter is an exploration. Each work is an effort to convey the soul of a place – how it feels – by offering a visual expression of what lies at its core. The challenge for me lies in dialing back non-essential details that might dominate while retaining, and revealing, what’s essential. These images should draw one in and feel immersive. Early on, I envisioned them very large – and I still do. But because stepping back from the pieces dramatically increase their impact, smaller pieces work very well; you don’t have to be far away to perceive their depth.
The paper matters tremendously; for these works, I prefer a creamy matte paper so they read almost like silkscreens rather than photographs, enhancing their dreamy character. That said, there are images that demand the greater contrast and intensity of traditional photographic paper.
